Overview
Located in South Florida, the 95 Express dynamic toll lanes have been designed to provide customers with a more reliable and predictable travel experience. Efficient traffic control during maintenance and incident management is an important operation component to help maintain free-flow conditions in the Express Lanes. As part of this project, Versilis was selected by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to provide an automated access control solution at various 95 Express entrance points.
Project Scope
The automated access control solution consists of automated advance warning signs including flashing beacons, blank out signs, automated pivoting signs, as well as automated and highly visible crash tested gates. At each entrance point, the signs and the gates prevent drivers from entering the express lanes during incidents or planned maintenance. All devices are activated from the Sunguide District 6 Traffic Management Center (TMC), where operators have full camera coverage of each entrance point.
Sunguide commands are sent to a Versilis Commander located at each site. Versilis Commanders are configured to comply with FDOT’s standard operational procedure (SOP), ensuring that each action is successfully completed before proceeding to the next step. The primary objectives of this project were to enhance worker safety, minimize response times, and reduce the resources allocated to lane closures. By implementing Versilis’ automated access control system, these objectives were effectively addressed, contributing to a safer and more efficient operation of the 95 Express lanes.
