Overview

The Henry E. Kinney Tunnel, also known as the New River Tunnel, is a highway tunnel in downtown Fort Lauderdale, Florida that carries US Route 1 beneath the New River and Las Olas Boulevard. In 2020, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) initiated a project to rehabilitate the tunnel, which included structural and architectural upgrades, roadway improvements, and the integration of an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) to enhance safety and mobility in the area. Versilis was selected to install an automated lane closure system to facilitate tunnel closures at the approaches to the tunnel.

Project Scope

FDOT decided to install an automated gate system at the tunnel, allowing operators to quickly close off access and divert traffic on US-1. Two horizontal swing gates were installed at the tunnel approaches to improve maintenance and incident management. Automated traffic control increases safety by reducing worker exposure to live traffic and response time, ultimately leading to better facility performance.

Safe & Efficient Tunnel Closures

Safety benefits

  • Reduced worker and responder exposure to live traffic
  • Increased motorist compliance and safety with highly visible and crash tested gates

Operational Benefits

  • Reduced time required to close tunnel
