Overview
With 192,000 vehicles traveling through southern Dallas County each day, the Interstate 35E (I-35E) in the Southern Gateway corridor is one of the most congested roadways in Texas. The Southern Gateway project is a Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) design-build construction project aimed at rebuilding and widening I-35E south of downtown. Additionally, it involves widening US 67 between I-35E and I-20, as well as the I-35E/US 67 split.
The primary goals of the 11-mile project were to address safety concerns, alleviate congestion, improve traffic operations, rectify roadway deficiencies, and enhance system connectivity. As part of the project, reversible non-tolled express lanes and general-purpose lanes were constructed to increase capacity in the corridor.
Project Scope
A total of 50 horizontal warning gates, or automated barricade gates (ABGs), were installed at four sites along the I-35E reversible managed lane corridor. These ABGs serve the primary purpose of channelizing traffic away from the managed lane entrance point, which is closed using a vehicle arresting barrier (VAB).
TxDOT required the ABGs to be integrated with the VAB, LED open/closed module signs, remote contact module, and the managed lane access control system software/firmware. The automated lane closure gates can be deployed through Versilis Smart Handheld Controller, and they can also be operated remotely from the DalTrans Transportation Management Center via the Versilis Commander.
